Planned Power Outage - San Pedro - Sunday, July 19, 2009

Belize Electricity Limited advises its customers in San Pedro Town that the supply of electricity will be temporarily interrupted from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Sunday, July 19, 2009.

Areas to be affected: All that area from Royal Palms to Casa Manana.

BEL apologizes for the inconvenience caused but this outage is necessary for the company to perform maintenance on the distribution system in the area.

Karaoke Fund Raiser at Roadkill Bar

The weekly karaoke night at Roadkill Bar turned into a fund raiser last Wednesday when crooners of all chords showed up to belt one out for a good cause. In an effort to raise funds for a young man in need of medical attention, the bar managed to raise over $500 while the patrons enjoyed a great night of entertainment. Kudos to Helda for organizing the event and singing her heart out and all performers were in fine form for the event. The night was a huge success and everyone, singers and customers alike, had a fun time.

SPTC Sports Summer Program kicks off

The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) sponsored Sports Summer Program kicked off yesterday with a parade. All camp participants took to the streets and made their way to the Old Footbal Field where orientation took place. Pictured below are camp organizers Debbie Spain and Pablo Ico.
Belting the music during the parade were Gene Lopez and HoraceDuring the four weeks that the camp will be held, children from ages 7-16 will get the opportunity to participate in basketball, soccer, baseball and volleyball. At the end of the camp a party will be thrown for campers.

Hol Chan releases Reef Currents

The Northern Marine Reserve Management Unit has launched a new initiative, a quarterly newsletter spearheaded by the Hol Chan Marine Reserve staff. Reef Currents, is geared to inform stakeholders in the protected areas in and around San Pedro Ambergris Caye about some of the work being done in protecting the environment. The newsletter is expected to be an important communication tool between the management of the marine reserves and the stakeholders including tour operators, hoteliers, visitors, students and the local residents.

The newsletter features short articles on the environment, improvement at the marine reserves, activities being done by the different marine reserves and a cartoon section. “We are inviting readers to submit comments and feedback,” stated Hol Chan Marine Reserve Manager Miguel Alamilla. Alamilla added that, “we want the newsletter to be as interactive, dynamic and interesting as possible. As we work on the different issues we will be making new additions to the newsletter.” The newsletter is mass emailed to various individuals and organizations while hard copies are distributed in strategic areas including the Hol Chan Marine Reserve Office.
