Robert Silva sets new Guinness World Record

Robert Silva, the 31 year old from Chicago, Illinois has set a new Guiness World Record for the longest saltwater dive at two days, zero hours, three minutes, eighteen seconds and ten nanoseconds (2:00:03:18:10 as recorded on the timer). The previous record had been set at 36 and a half hours.

Although tired and hungry, Silva honored The San Pedro Sun and waiting Belize City media with an interview which can be viewed below.Video footage, photographs and media reports will be submitted to World Guinness for perusal and the official announcement should be made within the next two weeks. A crowd awaited Silva's arrival to Ramon's dock, where he was greeted with applause and loads of congratulations.The wonderful staff of Ramon's Village Dive Shop assisted Silva in this incredible feat. Silva's first thing to do was order some food, "I want some rice, some beans, maybe chicken or pork but please no fish," he joked.

Millions of Mexicans are today celebrating their country’s Independence. At the strike of midnight, skies in cities all across the Mexican Republic were lit by thousands of fireworks following the Independence Eve ceremony. Today, September 16th marks the 199th Anniversary of Mexico’s Independence which is being celebrated under the theme “Fiesta Mexicana, un grito de alegria; Rumbo al bicentenario (Mexican festivities, a shout of joy; heading for the bi-centennial)”

Spelling Bee tonight!

Students have been taking a part of this year's September Celebrations. As part of the festivities, the San Pedro Town Council has prepared a Spelling Bee which will take place tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Old Football Field.

Pictures below are from the Children's Talent Show which took place last Friday. Kids from the various island schools showcased their great singing voices and dances as they took part in the event.

PRESS RELEASE - September 14, 2009 - In an effort to increase the participation of our high school population in our annual NATIONAL SEPTEMBER CELEBRATIONS, the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the National Institute of Culture and History, is organizing and sponsoring an event titled, “HIGH SCHOOL STAR SEARCH”.

The event is opened to high school students countrywide who are talented in any of the following genres – DRAMA, DANCE, and MUSIC. Entries may be by individuals or group, and prizes will be awarded to the following:--BEST DRAMA, BEST MUSIC [VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL], BEST DANCE. A MINISTER’S TROPHY will be awarded to the school whose participant is selected as the MOST OUTSTANDING ENTRY, while all other participants and institutions will be awarded CERTIFICATES OF PARTICIPATION.

A panel of judges will be selected from a countrywide pool of suitably qualified persons.

HIGH SCHOOL STAR SEARCH 2009 is scheduled for Wednesday September 16, 2009 at 10:00am to allow for maximum participation and support from all participating institutions.
