Miss San Pedro High 2011 contestants announced

Beauty pageants are nothing new to the community San Pedro. As a children, little girls are excited to participate in the Little Miss Chiquitita Pageant. The Miss San Pedro pageant is a pageant that invites many young ladies to participate, vying for this very prestigious title which allows them to experience San Pedro and the Country as an Ambassador of San Pedro; the popularity contest for the Miss Carnaval; all these pageants invite young beauties to compete for a crown. While most pageants are done mainly for the crown, SPHS invites participants to compete not only for a crown, but for the grand prize of a one year full scholarship to SPHS.

Nine beautiful young ladies from the SPHS are in preparation for the 2011-2012 scholarship pageant. Giselle Almilla (1A), Josie Lopez (2G), Lina Mazariegos (1C), Marissa Gomez (1H), Nayelli Puc (2C), Mahe Pereira (1E), Alexis Del Valle (2A), Vivienne Forman (1G) and Miriam Rodriguez (2E) will be competing.

The pageant is scheduled for Saturday, April 2nd at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium commencing at 6:00pm. The beauties will be judged on talent, formal wear, culture as well as their performance throughout the preparation phase of the competition.

Outgoing Queen Ms. Solani Graniel will also be accompanying the beauties as they prepare. All proceeds from the pageant will go towards financially assisting students that need the help, either towards CXC exam payments, book purchases or school fees, to name a few. The general public is invited to come out and show their support to the San Pedro High School and these talented young ladies. There will be lots to eat and drink.

Child Stimulation Month celebrated!

Every year the Ministry of Education sets aside March as Child Stimulation Month. A calendar of events has been prepared and issued to the various pre-schools on the island. The celebration started on Tuesday March 1st under the theme “Parents, educate your child”, with an opening parade along the main streets of the island.

The month is set aside and the activities are designed with the intention of raising awareness about the importance of early childhood education. Throughout the month, the students of the various Pre-Schools will be observing and hosting events such as Flag Day – where the children learn the importance and significance of the colors as wells as the symbols on the Belizean flag; children’s talent day, sports day, culture day and visits to the various public service offices to name a few.

ABC Pre-School had a special visit from Barney the Dinosaur on Friday, March 4th for Hug Day.

On Wednesday March 9th, grandparents and pre-school students got a chance to share in a bonding experience of creating art.

Brighter Tomorrow Pre-school had a wonderful time with the kids as they visited the San Pedro Public Library on Wednesday March 9th for story reading.

Y-Wam entertains at D Sea Convenience Store

On Friday March 4th D - Sea was the venue for various groups from Y-WAM who wowed the crowd with various gospel selections.

The Youth With A Mission , (YWAM) Destination Paradise Caribbean Base is located five miles north of San Pedro Town. The 2.5 acre property is located right on a beautiful white sand beach overlooking the second longest barrier reef system in the world.

The setting provides an ideal location for students to immerse themselves to get equipped and prepared for serving in missions, to gain understanding in the ways of God and each one’s place in His plan and His will and to have a great time in the process.

The YWAM DP Caribbean Base is home to the Adventure DTS where students develop leadership skills, grow in the knowledge of God and get equipped to make Him known. As part of the course, students learn skills in SCUBA diving, receiving up to two levels of PADI dive certification as part of the DTS and having plenty of opportunity to dive throughout the school.

Oceana speaks out at Satiim oil summit

Press Release - Oceana - March 8, 2011 - Oceana has once again sounded the alarm on the legal issues governing Belize’s Oil and Petroleum Industry, at the Satiim Oil Summit held in Punta Gorda Town on February, 8th, 2011.

Mrs. Audrey Matura – Shepherd, VP of Oceana Belize, presented on the inadequacies in current legal structures which control Belize’s fledgling oil industry. She spoke to an attentive audience, comprised of major local and international environmental and human rights organizations, explaining how Belize’s weak petroleum laws could allow for abuse of property and citizens rights.
In her presentation, she exposed how oil companies have extreme power via the current laws over individual property rights, and showed how the terms of their contracts were not being properly followed. The audience became seriously concerned over her demonstration of the accepted royalty rates our country is receiving, and were disturbed by the power given to Ministers to issue contracts at their discretion.
Mrs. Shepherd also gave assurance of Oceana’s full support to Mr. Leonard Reimer from the Spanish Lookout Community and Mr. John Carr of the Belize Landowners Association, who in their own presentations voiced a determination to bring their challenges in dealing with the oil companies and the government to the public front.

The objectives of the Satiim Oil Summit were to increase awareness and stimulate activism among civil society and within indigenous communities in the Toledo District, regarding the threats posed by oil development to the environment and human rights; and to build a coalition of local and national civil society actors to actively put pressure on government officials to reevaluate their stance on oil development within fragile, critical ecosystems, including offshore and in protected areas, while promoting policies that entail sustainable development, respect for human rights and environmental conservation.
