Sharks and Rays killed in Campeche Mexico for local use

In the month of March, controversial images of fishermen slaying nurse sharks in Belizean waters circulated through the media and prompted government officials to conduct an investigation into those activities.
In a recent trip by one of our reporters to Campeche City in the State of Campeche, Mexico, our cameras caught these images of slaughtered eagle rays and at least two types of sharks brought ashore by local fishermen in front of “Galaria” restaurant.

The catch called the attention of many by-passers and locals as people ran out of the restaurant to take a look at the sea creatures.

It would be interesting to know whether it is legal to hunt these animals and if the butchering is a regular practice by traditional fishermen in the northern states of Mexico to fish those marine animals. Equally interested to know are the effects that such activities might have on the entire Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System Project of which Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras form a part of.

Delivery van crashes into beer truck

A delivery van had an unfortunate mishap early this afternoon when it crashed into the beer delivery tractor on Barrier Reef Drive. Luckily, no one was severely injured, as the driver only suffered minor lacerations. We urge everyone to drive safely, and with due care and attention.

Child Stimulation Ends with Parade

Culminating with a rowdy parade through the streets of San Pedro, Child Stimulation Month drew to an end. Children from ABC Preschool, Brighter Tomorrow Preschool, Little Angels Preschool and San Pedro Preschool were accompanied by great drumming from both the San Pedro High School and Isla Bonita Drum groups. Live music kept the children and their parents moving and grooving through town.

"Celebration of Life" Of Fred Somes

A "CELEBRATION OF LIFE " for Fred and his family will be taking place on Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at The Palapa Bar and Grill.
Friends are invited to The Palapa Bar to "Honor the fact that Fred was a NAVY VETERAN CORMAN", guest are asked to wear their best Tropical blue shirts.
Fred will be missed and was loved by his family and friends. Come and celebrate the life of Fred Somes.

Traffic mishap Sat. night

On Friday night, by-standers lined up on Barrier Reef Drive as a man laid on the cobblestones. A traffic accident caused for much glances and looks. The man, bloodied, got up and managed to get into the police vehicle and was transported to receive medical attention.

Traffic Accident
*Mynor Martinez, 32-years-old taxi driver of DFC Subdivision, San Pedro Town, reported to Police that on Friday, March 27th, 2009 about 8:20 p.m. while he was driving his white Toyota Minivan with license plates SP D0067 at the intersection of Barrier Reef Drive and Black Coral Street, he felt something knock into the passenger side of his vehicle and upon making checks, he observed a male person of Hispanic decent lying on the ground beside a black beach cruiser bicycle. The individual, later identified as Lorenzo Gonzalez, 27-year-old laborer of DFC Subdivision was issued with a pair of legal medical forms where doctor certified injuries as wounding. The incident remains under police investigation.
