Great Kiskadee Takes a Sunday Afternoon Bath

The Great Kiskadee is a large, striking bird whose name is derived from its call which sounds very much like French for “What are you saying” ...”Quest-ceque dit,” or kis-ka-dee. The Great Kiskadee is found from Texas, USA to Argentina and lives in open woodlands, streamside thickets, groves, orchards and parks. In the tropics it occurs widely in many semi-open habitats, usually avoiding dense unbroken forest. It is a permanent resident throughout its range and does not migrate. Chances are you will hear this bird before you see it. During the heat of the day, while most birds are silent, the kiskadee will draw your attention by calling its name constantly while perched from a telephone wire or on a roof. This robin-sized bird is about ten inches in length. It has black and white stripes on the crown and sides of its head. It has a white line above its eyes. Its chest and undersides are a bright yellow and its throat is white. Its back and wings are brown and its bill and legs are black. Its bright pattern is unique in North America, but in the tropics several other flycatchers look almost identical.

Education Minister on Day 2 of his visit

The Minister of Education Honorable Patrick Faber continues his two days visit to schools in San Pedro Town. This morning the Minister made stops at the San Pedro High School, Isla Bonita Primary School and the San Pedro RC School.

The Minister took the opportunity to wish all students a happy Education Week. As a small treat to the students the Minister declared today a holiday for the students at Holy Cross Anglican. The students of other schools on the island will get Monday off.

Open Day at San Pedro RC School

The San Pedro Roman Catholic School opened its doors to visitors today for the school open day. The open day activity is one of the many functions for Education Week. The open day was centered on the many ethnic groups found in Belize.

Hon. Patrick Faber Tours San Pedro Schools

The Minister of Education, Honorable Patrick Faber, is on a two-day visit in San Pedro Town as part of his country wide tour. His first stop was at Holy Cross Anglican School where he addressed the students and teachers.Minister of Education Hon. The Minister urged the students to study hard and to “stay in school.” In his message to the teachers, Minister Faber explained that the Government of Belize is investing more money to improve the level of education in the country.
