Caye Caulker protest on Thursday

The Caye Caulker Neighbourhood Watch Program Limited (C.C.N.W.P.L.), firstly, would like publicly express its heartfelt condolences to the Young and Badillo families on the untimely passing of Mrs. Lorleen Young. Mrs. Young will always be remembered in our thoughts and prayers as a woman that was loved by many.
Secondly, time and time again there have been reports by tourists and residents alike of criminal activity or intended criminal activity on Caye Caulker to the Caye Caulker Police Department. On numerous occasions these calls for assistance to the Caye Caulker Police Department have gone unanswered and uninvestigated. Time and time again tourists and villagers have been turned away or actively discouraged by the Caye Caulker Police Department not to report any attempted wrongdoing or criminal activity on the island. There are further allegations that many officers of the Caye Caulker Police Department are in collusion with various persons who are connected to criminal or drug related activity.

The C.C.N.W.P.L. appeals to Hon. Manuel Heredia - Area Representative for Caye
Caulker and San Pedro – Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture; the
Belize Tourism Board; the Commissioner of the Police Department – Crispin
Jeffries for a full and immediate replacement of all members of the Caye Caulker
Police Department as this police contingent presently stationed on the island
has had the worst performance of any police contingent ever in the history of
Caye Caulker. This must be done to safeguard the interests of Caye Caulker’s
tourist industry.

Finally, the C.C.N.W.P.L. also asks all residents of Caye Caulker to participate in a “March Against Crime” walk on Thursday, October 9th at 2:00 p.m. at the Central Park to express their solidarity in combating crime on Caye Caulker. Together we must protect Caye Caulker.

Water taxi war in San Pedro Town

Information is still sketchy but The San Pedro Sun has confirmed that the San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi and the Caye Caulker Water Taxi have both changed docking locations. The sudden change came after internal problems within the San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi led to Giovanni Marin pulling out of the cooperation and joining the Caye Caulker Water Taxi.
In speaking briefly with The Sun, Marin stated that the current users of San Pedro Belize Express will have to find a new name for their water taxi, since that name is registered under his name. Marin stated that he is willing to challenge it in court. For the time being, members of the San Pedro Police Department have been dispatch to both water taxies to prevent a confrontation. SAGA Calendars launched at The Lime!

The boys and girls of the 2010 SAGA calendar were on hand to greet friends and fans during the official launch of said calendar. Food and drink, plus calendars with beautiful shots of pets and their owners (shot by Conch Creative) were also on sale. Naturally, attendees were eager to get their own signed copy!!
Thanks to everyone for their support and to Lime for hosting this event. The fundraiser was held as part of the FOTHS' (Friends Of The Humane Society) generous contributions to the SAGA society of San Pedro.

Tropic Air employee found dead in Caye Caulker

The Caye Caulker community is still shaken following the death of a well known villager. The incident unraveled just before 6:00 on Thursday evening inside the home of 51 year old Lorleen Young. Young, who was employed as the Caye Caulker Tropic Air Manager had just returned from work when she was accosted inside her home and brutally murdered.
According to the husband of the victim, Charles Young Sr., he arrived from work when he went to use the bathroom. Charles stated that there he saw his wife lying on the ground, face down in a pool of blood. Charles went on to explain that at first he felt that his wife had fallen and hurt herself. It was not until he picked her up that he saw Young had been wounded. “When I picked her up I saw a large cut to her neck,” stated a tearful Charles. That is when he realized that his wife had been the victim of a robbery. In speaking to the media, Officer in Charge of the Caye Caulker Police Station Sergeant Dirk Dyers stated that sometime around 6:00 p.m., they received a call that a woman had been murdered. Dyers stated that the police then visiting a home on Pueblo Nuevo Avenue in the southern part of the village. Upon arrival they observed a female, later identified as Lorleen Young, lying on the bathroom floor in a large pool of blood. The body had a large cut wound to the throat. Initial police investigations reveal that Young had just arrived from work and was inside when her home was invaded. It was during the burglary that the perpetrator (s) attacked her, slit her throat and left her to bleed to death. There was no visible sign of forced entry and police believe that the culprit (s) gained entrance through the front door. According to police, the only thing that was stolen from the victim was a small purse containing her personal documents.Police have not found the murder weapon but have detained two male persons for the murder. Young, who is the mother of three, was employed at Tropic Air for 15 years. Prior to working with Tropic Air, Young was teacher for 14 years at the Caye Caulker Roman Catholic School. Police say that Caye Caulker Village had not seen a murder for years. Anyone with information that can assist the police in their investigation is asked to call the nearest police station.

Press Release - Tropic Air - Oct. 2nd, 2009 - Tropic Air is sorry to announce that Lorleen Young our Station Manager in Caye Caulker was killed during a robbery of her home yesterday evening. Lorleen was a 15-year employee of Tropic Air, and a loyal and valued member of our management team. Lorleen was a dedicated wife and mother. She is survived by her husband and children. Funeral arrangements to be announced.
