Emergency Power Outage - San Pedro - Monday, November 9, 2009

Belize Electricity Limited advises its customers in San Pedro Town that the supply of electricity will be temporarily interrupted from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 9, 2009.

Areas to be affected: The portion of San Pedro Town including Pescador Drive from BEL’s substation to north of the river mouth to Tranquility.

BEL apologizes for the inconvenience caused but this outage is necessary for the Company to perform emergency works on the distribution system in the area.

Students join in celebrating Dental Week

In celebration of Dental Week, the Dental Central Region joined forces with Grace Kennedy (suppliers of Colgate) and the San Pedro Dental Clinic to hold a Dental Fair at the Lions Den. Students were invited to take part in the various discussions concerning dental health. With free gifts which included toothpaste and toothbrushes, kids were educated on how to properly brush their teeth while having lots of fun. Dental Week ended yesterday.

Johnny Briceño visits the ACCC

On Thursday, Leader of the Opposition [People’s United Party (PUP)] Johnny Briceño was on a working visit in San Pedro Town. As part of his visit, Briceño addressed the Ambergris Caye Chamber of Commerce (ACCC) at the Blue Water Grill.

Honorable Briceño addressed various issues including the crime situation in San Pedro, the decline in the tourism industry, the recession in the economy and the reform the PUP is undergoing. Briceño then entertained a number of questions following his address. More details will be in next week's issue of The San Pedro Sun.

Police investigate death of San Pedro resident

San Pedro Police continue their investigation in the death of a San Pedro resident. Sometime around 4:20 PM Police visited the western end of Jewfish Street next to the lagoon where they found a Hispanic man, later identified as 64 year old Juan Guemez, floating in the water.

According to Police, the body of Guemez was found by a local resident who was checking on his boat following a heavy rain. The cause of death is unknown at this time and Police continue their investigation. The San Pedro Sun will have more details in the next week's issue.

Francis "Chino" Eiley returns home a free man

After serving 7 years of a lifetime prison sentence, Francis "Chino" Eiley has been freed. He arrived on the island, much to the joy of his family and friends, who welcomed him with open arms, emotional tears and lots of love.
Chino's lifetime sentence was overturned by the Privy Council in London. He, along with two other men, Ernest Savery and Lenton Polonio were convicted of the November 2nd, 2002 murder of 62-year-old Justo Jairo "Galento" Perez. They were officially sentenced to life in prison on August 13th, 2004. After their original appeal was overturned, they turned to the Privy Council wherein a panel of 5 judges heard their case.
On Wednesday morning (November 4th, 2009) in Her Majesty in Council, Chief Judge Lord Phillip handed down its decision overturning the conviction. According to one of their attorneys, Antoniette Moore, "all three men will be released after being imprisoned for seven years. They were unfairly, unsafely and unsatisfactorily convicted of murder without sufficient evidence."
