Every school year, especially at this time, students and parents are put under pressure to not only find their new school books for the new semester, but also are burdened with how to sell their old books. We have created MIBOOKLIST.COM, an easy to use, helpful, and free Belizean website to provide a solution.

MiBooklist.com was created and designed by a concerned parent with both the book buyer and seller in mind, to be a medium through which sellers and buyers of school books - or any other kind of book for that matter - can be connected.
Buyers can search by Title, Author, Publisher, ISBN and more! Sellers can post as many books on the site as they wish. When someone wants to purchase a book they have found on the site, they contact the seller directly and make mutual arrangements for the sale.

Use of the site is free - it costs nothing to look for books, and it costs nothing to put books for sale. Furthermore, Mibooklist.com is in no way involved in the sale nor do we ask for any commission. We just want it to be useful, so please tell a friend, or feel free to print out the attached flyer or post or promote at will in your particular medium.

Hon. Manuel Heredia announces his UDP Slate for the 2012 municipal elections

OKLAHOMA CITY MAN CHARGED WITH FAILING TO REGISTER AS SEX OFFENDER

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – DAVID HARLEY McLAIN, 55, from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was indicted for failing to register as a sex offender, announced Sanford C. Coats, United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma.

The indictment alleges that from December 1, 2010, through March 30, 2011, McLlain was required to register as a sex offender pursuant to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA and also known as the “Adam Walsh Act”) after traveling from Oklahoma to New Orleans, Louisiana, and to the country of Belize. McLain was arrested on March 31, 2011, by Deputy United States Marshals with the Sex Offender Investigations Unit for the Western District of Oklahoma when he arrived at the Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas, after being expelled from Belize. McLain is currently being held in the Oklahoma County Jail pending further court appearances.

The public is reminded that the indictment is merely an accusation and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Reference is made to the indictment for further information.

This case is the result of investigations conducted by the United States Marshals Service Sex Offender Investigations Unit for the Western District of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City Police Department with substantial assistance from the Belize Police Department and the U.S. Embassy Regional Security Office in Belize. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney R. Don Gifford.

British Caribbean Bank opens in San Pedro

British Caribbean Bank opened its doors to residents of San Pedro last night, Tuesday April 12th 2011. The ceremony was well attended by patrons of the bank, members of the business community, administrators of British Caribbean Bank, special invited guests including the Mayor, Elsa Paz, and members of the media.

Ms. Natalie Arceo opened the ceremony with a beautiful rendition of our national anthem "Land of the Free, followed by a blessing by Father Daniel Nuñez. Belize Mayors make a splash in the UK visit generates business interest in Belize

Press Release – British High Commission – April 8, 2011 – 8 Mayors from Belize visited the UK at the end of March sponsored by the British High Commission. Those in the delegation were: Mayor Simeon Lopez, Belmopan; Mayor John August, San Ignacio and Santa Elena;

Mayor Hilberto Campos, Corozal; Mayor Nicholas Ruiz, Benque Viejo Del Carmen; Mayor Aaron Gongora, Dangriga; Mayor Floyd Lino, Punta Gorda; Mayor Elsa Paz, San Pedro; Mayor Zenaida Moya-Flowers, Belize City.

The team were in the UK for the Commonwealth Local Government Conference in Cardiff, but went on to a major programme of high-level visits in London. Also attending the conference was a team from the Ministry of Labour, Local Government and Rural Development made up of Minister Hon Gabriel Martinez, CEO Mrs Marion McNab and Mr Celso Carcamo (Local Government Officer).

The Local Government Conference was held at the City Hall in Cardiff, Wales from 15 to 18 March 2011. Hosted in the city for the first time, the theme of the Conference was “Energising Local Economies; Partnerships for Prosperous Communities”. It presented Cardiff Council with the opportunity to share international knowledge with delegates from 54 Commonwealth countries. More than 500 delegates attended, with Belize providing one of the larger delegations, including Ministers, Chief Executives and Senior Local Government staff. The Conference provided a platform for discussion on the role of local government in local economic development and explored ways to maximise opportunities for encouraging prosperous communities. The main areas of focus were youth unemployment, regeneration and education, securing investment, promoting enterprise and funding business support initiatives.

This was the first visit to the UK for most of the Mayors. The High Commission was therefore keen to show them the UK’s wealth of private sector experience in delivering services to and for the public sector. In partnership with the Caribbean Council they arranged a full programme of meetings during the team’s second week, which provided a way of identifying opportunities for working with UK companies to address local issues in Belize. It also served to alert UK companies to opportunities in Belize and to build business relationships.

The intense three day programme started with a tour of the recently completed massive construction project at the site of the 2012 Olympic Games. The first of their meetings was with Eversheds LLP, an innovative international law firm with legal specialists that operate around the world in sectors including financial institutions, energy, natural resources, food and transport. The discussions focussed on waste management, sanitation, recycling and tourism. A meeting with the Deputy Mayor of London, Richard Barnes, provided an opportunity to share experiences on the difficulties faced at local government level by both countries in areas such as crime, health, education and tax recovery. The meeting with the All Party Parliamentary Group for Belize was well represented by members of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords including Chairman, Lord Foulkes. The Belize High Commissioner, HE Kamela Palma also attended and spoke at this meeting.

The second day started with a tour of the Tate and Lyle Sugar Factory who have sourced cane sugar from Belize for over 35 years. Meetings followed with Mott MacDonald, an employee-owned management, engineering and development consultancy serving the public and private sector around the world, and Crown Agents who are an international development company committed to global development and growth gave a presentation on the work they had done on tax reforms in the Caribbean. The Mayors also met with Living Earth Foundation, an established NGO specialising in working with people to resolve their environmental and social concerns, and the South London Waste Partnership - made up of four local councils who are working together to provide improved and more cost-effective waste management services to their residents.

The High Commissioner for Belize also joined the Mayors at a meeting with senior officials at the Foreign Office, and hosted a high-level reception for them at London’s Canning House at which she made a short speech welcoming the Mayors to the UK.

The visit has been seen as a huge success, and generated a great deal of interest from the UK companies, who were extremely impressed by the level of engagement by the Mayors on key issues relating to Belize.

SP Hardware Robbed

A source from within the San Pedro Police Department has confirmed to The San Pedro Sun that SP Hardware was robbed in the late afternoon on Friday April 8th 2011. The incident happened sometime before ten o'clock last night. While the incident was reported, as of post time, the manager had not made a formal report. As a result, the total loss from the robbery is unknown.

The San Pedro Sun will continue to follow this story will keep you updated as more information becomes available. The incident remains under investigation.

San Pedro Smile Center at the Poly Clinic

The San Pedro Smile Center is back in San Pedro, this time; at the San Pedro Poly Clinic II (SPPC). This was done in an effort to make the services offered more accessible to the students at the San Pedro RC School; a school, where the students are probably even more in need of the dental services than others.

Retired Medical practitioners, Dr. Louis Lam (Minnesota) and Dr. Jim Snyder (Iowa); from the United States were at the SPPC II for four days; Monday April 4^th through Thursday April 7^th. Both doctors are retired. Dr. Louis was a practicing dentist for over 26 years while Dr. Jim has been practicing since 1976. Along with the two doctors was Mr. Dwayne Gemelke, also retired, who is assisting the dentists.

While at the poly clinic, the dentists provided services such as cavity filling, extractions and root canal treatments to save teeth. They were also actively teaching the patients Oral Hygiene as well as the importance of preventative care.

Dr. Lam informed The San Pedro Sun that while most of the supplies brought down have been purchased through donations, visiting practitioners are responsible for their own airfare and hotel accommodations. However, the love of their profession and the very needed medical services that they are able to provide all makes it worth the while.

Organizers would like to extend a big thank you to Maya Island Air and the Conch Shell hotel for all their support. The general public is informed that Dr. Cima offers dental services at the San Pedro Poly Clinic II Monday through Friday 8-5 to all residents of San Pedro, at no cost other than a small donation to the Poly Clinic if affordable.

San Pedro Community Health Fair underway

The San Pedro Community Health Fair started this morning at 9:00am. The various booths are set up at the central park, offering services from the Diabetes Association, Public Health, HECOPAB, Alliance Against AIDS, Maternal and Child Care, San Pedro Town Council, Lions Club, Kidney Association, Vector Control, NDACC, Dental and Chest clinic.

Students from the various schools came out to listen to educational presentations as they visit and are acquainted with all the different services. Services offered include, FREE HIV TESTING and blood pressure, to name a few.

Come on out to the Central Part and be a part of the educational event.

World Vet program in San Pedro

Fifteen volunteers were at the SAGA Humane Society on Thursday March 24^th as part of a World Vet program, providing sterilization surgeries to the pets of the island. The group was in Caye Caulker earlier during the week providing free spay neuter services and health consultations to the small animal population on the Island.

(World Vets is a non-government organization (NGO) providing veterinary aid around the globe in collaboration with animal advocacy groups, foreign governments, US and foreign military groups and veterinary professionals abroad. Our work spans 25 countries and 6 continents and addresses not only veterinary issues, but also human health issues impacted by zoonotic diseases in developing countries) www.worldvets.org.

In San Pedro for a day, the group provided over 70 surgeries to pets. The group of volunteers included six doctors and nine volunteer technicians and assistants. While the organization has visited Caye Caulker previously, this was World Vet’s first trip to San Pedro. Dr. Mike Corcoran, trip leader, informsThe San Pedro Sun that he hopes that this can become a yearly event that spans couple days.

The volunteers came form all parts of the country including Washington, Los Angeles, Colorado, Baltimore, District of Columbia, Texas and others.

The SAGA Humane Society takes this opportunity to thank the World Vet Team for a wonderful spay/neuter event. Child Stimulation month ends

Under the theme "Parents educate your Child", Child Stimulation Month came to an end wit the various primary schools getting together and marching down the main streets of San Pedro.

St. Patrick's Day Celebrated

Over one hundred St. Patrick celebrants gathered at Pedro’s Inn on Thursday night to celebrate the little green man. With $30 bottomless beer cups and free green fairies, prizes for outfits the musical talents of Barefoot Skinny, Gino, Doug, Drummer Dan, Derrick, Rick and Valentino kept the crowd well entertained.

The rather Large "little green man" was on hand for photo op as well!
