SAGA Halloween Pet Party a Howling Sucess!
Pet lovers turned out in full force on Sunday at the annual SAGA Halloween Party at BC's Bar. Dogs (and one cat) of all sizes, shapes and colors donned creative costumes ranging from the cute and creative to the scary. A variety of prizes were awarded to the costume winners (to be reveled in The SPSUN this week) and the judges, Lady Ms. Dixie Bowen, Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr. and Her Worship Mayoress Elsa Paz had the tough duty of picking the best of the best. The annual event is a key fund raiser for the humane society and is widely supported and enjoyed by the community.

San Pedro Community Relief Fund Established For Hurricane Richard Victims
Community groups and leaders met this evening to determine how the community of San Pedro can assist families on the mainland who have suffered the consequences of Hurricane Richard. With reports of over 200 homes damaged during the storm, and under the directive of Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr. who attended today’s Cabinet meeting, it was determined that building supplies were paramount in assisting those in need. A San Pedro Community Relief Fund has been established and fund raising efforts are slated to begin tomorrow.Students are encouraged to bring $1 to school tomorrow and a street-side collection drive will be held in front of Reef Radio beginning at 7am. A Belize Bank account will be opened where donations can be made as well. Fund raising efforts will continue through Thursday.
On Friday plans are for representatives from the Community Relief Fund to travel to Belmopan where they will present NEMO Head Quarters with the monies raised. In turn NEMO will use the donation to obtain the building supplies necessary for rebuilding and repairing the damaged homes.

Tropical Storm Matthew Falls Lighthouse on Half Moon Caye Natural Monument

Belize City, Belize, October 1, 2010 - The historic lighthouse at Half Moon Caye has finally given way to the forces of nature, as a result of Tropical Storm Matthew. The Half Moon Caye staff was evacuated from the island in the threat of the storm, so all we know is that it was some time during the weather-event that the structure fell. The discovery was made by staff upon their return to the island on Monday and a complete assessment was conducted on a trip to the island shortly thereafter. The active lighthouse was unaffected and continues to function properly.
The structure, built in 1820, now lies as disintegrated pieces of metal partly in the water at the edge of the island. The lighthouse was upgraded in 1845 and the steel frame added in 1930. Originally located midway between the north and southside of the caye, the lighthouse in recent years had been gradually moving closer to the water as weather phenomena changed the dynamics of the caye, shifting it northward. The old lighthouse was decommissioned in 1997 and since then has been gradually decaying. Efforts were being made to preserve the cultural landmark, but it did not gather enough steam to generate the needed funding. In 1998, a new lighthouse was erected several metres away from the old structure.
Belize Audubon Society is currently seeking funding to erect a multi-function building visually replicating the iconic architectural design of the old lighthouse. This new structure will not only honor the old lighthouse but will also function as a visitor centre, communications center, and patrol and observation deck.

Costa Maya Pageant Delegates Arrive!!
-Press Release-Costa Maya Festival Committee - July 30th, 2010 - The participants arriving today for the La Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant are Ms. El Salvador Diana Ingrid Martinez, Ms. Honduras Nicole Yaret Hawit, Ms. Mexico Priscilla Pastrana Lopez, Ms. Costa Rica Krysia Ortiz Campos, along with Ms. Belize Liliana Mia Nuñez, and the reigning La Reina de la Costa Maya Maritza Rivas. They are presently staying at Ramon’s Village Resort in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye which is our official hotel for the Costa Maya International Festival 2010.
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, Ms. Panama, Ms. Guatemala and Ms. Nicaragua will not be arriving today. It has been confirmed that they will be arriving tomorrow morning to join the other participants in the week’s schedule leading up to the pageant on Thursday, August 5th, 2010.

Dia de San Pedro Celebrated
Dia De San Pedro was celebrated after a week's delay, but it was worth the wait as entertainment came from all over to join San Pedranos in the festivities.
After a grand fireworks display on Friday night, there was some dancing and singing, followed by the second annual Karaoke competition, which was won by Valentino Caliz.
On Saturday night, it was Belizean Culture at its Best!! With fabulous performances by the Yo Creek Uch-Ben Ok-ot (Old/Traditional Dance) Dance Group, Belize National Dance Company and Super Furia Band from Orange Walk. 
Sunday's Fishing Tournament was cancelled, but the evening's events were back in full swing with more performances by the San Pedro Dance Company, Natalie Arceo, a surprise Cultural Show by a Mexican Dance Group and capped off with the fabulous stylings of Banda Cubana. All in all, the weekend was a great success, and hats off to the organizers for pulling off such a great event. Feliz Dia de San Pedro!!
