Memorial Held for Maria Antonia Plaza Gomez

A crowd gathered at the empty lot near where the body of Maria Antonia Plaza Gomez was found to hold a memorial mass in her honor. Many members of the community joined to celebrate the life of Plaza Gomez, which was cut short on Sunday, October 31st, 2010. Organized by Lady Dixie Bowen, the memorial gathered members of the business community, community activists, well-known public figures, local politicians, hotel industry insiders, Maya Island Air staff, students, teachers, local islanders and Police personnel.

Lady Bowen extended her sympathies to the family of the late Maria Antonia Plaza Gomez, and reiterated that the community as a whole feels the loss of such a young, vibrant life that was taken away much too soon.


The San Pedro Sun also joins in mourning, and we extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Maria Antonia. May she rest in peace.

Suspect Released

At approximately 8PM Friday night SP Police confirmed that the suspect they apprehended and questioned regarding the murder of Maria Antonia Plaza Gomez was released. According to police the suspect met the physical description of a man reportedly last seen with Plaza Gomez but the individual could confirm that he was a new tourist to Caye Caulker.

Reports are that the suspect was cooperative with the authorities during his interrogation and later the police arranged for his transport back to Caye Caulker.

At approximately 6:30PM tonight police transported a suspect in the Maria Antonia Plaza Gomez murder from Caye Caulker to San Pedro. The suspect, a Caucasian male of approximately late 20's to early 30's in age was of medium build, had a shoulder length blond ponytail and wore a Belize t-shirt. Upon arriving by boat via Caye Caulker Water Taxi the suspect, hand cuffed, was escorted to the SP Police Dept. where he was promptly detained behind closed doors. Missing Woman on San Pedro

Reports were filed with the San Pedro Police on Monday concerning a female flight attendant who is missing on San Pedro. 37 year old MARIA ANTONIA PLAZA GOMEZ, a Spanish National who works for Maya Island Regional has been missing since Saturday evening.

Reports are that she arrived in Belize on Saturday and told the rest of the flight crew that she would be spending the night on San Pedro. She checked into a hotel, went out for the evening and did not return to the hotel. Her possessions were left in the hotel room and police along with Maya Island Staff have launched a search on San Pedro.
