Fire at Judy's Bar & Fast Food

Shortly after 4:30pm, a call came in to The San Pedro Sun stating that a fire was underway in the San Juan Area. Upon arriving at the scene, thick smoke and large flames were seen consuming the structure between Richie's Supermarket and Los Cocos Restaurant.The business on fire was Judy's Bar & Fast Food. The wood/cement structure was quickly consumed by the flames, which it seems originated from the kitchen.

>While details are still unknown, what can be said is that the firefighters put in all efforts to control the fire, containing the area and ensuring that the surrounding areas were saved.

Fire at Micky's Place Restaurant

At approximately 2:40 Sunday afternoon San Pedro police received a call from neighbors of Micky's Place reporting flames and smoke coming from the establishment. The restaurant, located on the south end of Pescador Drive in downtown San Pedro, was closed and the owner was across the street at another business at the time of the fire.
The police contacted the SP Fire Department and with their quick response and assistance from neighbors the fire was contained and extinguished in quick time. According to the restaurant owner it is believed that the fire was caused by a deep-fat fryer that had been left on.
Further information regarding damages, along with photos, will be posted on Monday. There were no injuries reported at this time.

Brush Fire in Escalante

At around 11:25am on Thursday, October 7th, 2010, The San Pedro Fire Department (SPFD) received a call (via the San Pedro Police) that there was a fire underway at the Escalante Subdivision area. Upon arrival, The San Pedro Sun found the firemen getting the fire under control. According to the fire chief Jerome Garcia, the fire was getting out of control, and they had to call in a second truck to contain the fire from spreading to the homes nearby.
Mr. Garcia stated that the person who set the fire is being sought for questioning. It is well known that this person sets fires on a regular basis (burning garbage etc) in the area. Garcia further stated the public needs to be aware that fires should NOT be set within the town limits.

In the event that a fire has to be lit, the person who sets it must prepared to control the fire. Anyone who ignores this will be held accountable to the full extent of the law.

Taxi catches Fire

On Thursday night, The San Pedro Sun received a call that there was a fire in front of a hardware store on Seagrape Drive. Upon our arrival, a burgundy taxi van was being checked by fire officials, who had quickly gotten the flames under control. It is unsure what the cause of the fire was, as the van had just been parked, and the battery unplugged. Investigations continue.

Fire in San Pablo

Shortly around 8:24am, San Pedro fire officials received a call reporting a fire in the San Pablo area. Tenants on the ground floor of the two-story concrete home belonging to the Marin family smelled smoke and called the department. Officials arrived to find a fire underway in the east-facing bedroom in the upper flat of the home. No-one was in the home at the time.
An official cause of the fire has not been determined, but fire officials continue investigating. All items in the bedroom was destroyed, and the remaining rooms in the building received extensive smoke and water damage.

San Pedro Fire Department Places 2nd in National Fire Service Olympiad!

This year's 16th annual Fire Olympiad hosted by the Belize National Fire Service Olympiad was held over the weekend at the People's Stadium in Orange Walk Town. Six proud volunteers of the San Pedro Fire Service travelled north to showcase their abilities in performing the various drills to prove themselves as some of the country's finest firemen.
Miguel Medina lead his team of five volunteers: Claudio Tzul, Lester Diaz, Miguel Ancona, Alex Manzanero and Andy AlbeƱo to a very sucessful performance in this year's tournament. Competitors were required to compete in ten different fire drills in which San Pedro's team managed to acquire 13 trophies for placing first and second in the various drills. Competitors were judged by the time it took them to complete each drill successfully, with the competitor completing the drill within the shortest amount of time being the winner. The overall time each team took to complete all ten drills was tabulated and the team with the shortest time won. This year, San Ignacio Fire Station took first place and San Pedro brought home the trophy for second place. Congratulations to our San Pedro Fire Department!! Awesome Job!!!

Fire in San Pedro!!

Fire trucks were heard at the very busy intersection of Tarpon Street and Pescador Drive where a two storey wooden structure, housing Casa Cayo Real Estate among other businesses was under fire. At 2:40pm, June 25th, 2010, the San Pedro Fire Department received a call of a fire at a building located at the corner of Pescador Drive and Tarpon Street.
Officials arrived to find smoke and fire coming from the local eatery/internet cafe Full Chevere. They quickly managed to get the fire under control. After their investigations, it was concluded that the fire started from a microwave in the kitchen area of Full Chevere, and spread to the internet/eating area. Smoke damage extended to the other businesses surrounding the cafe, namely Casa Cayo Real Estate, San Pedro Pharmacy, and the living area upstairs.
The building was insured.





The Reef Radio deejays (DJ Habo & DJ Polo - y su mini Polo) were on the scene and reported live on air for their listeners.
Traffic was backed up as the entrance to Barrier Reef Drive was blocked as officials tried to bring the fire under control.

Brush Fire by Ambergris Stadium

Fire officials were called to the scene by Ambergris Stadium mid-morning where a fire was getting out of control. Apparently garbage was being burnt and it started spreading to the dry brush around it. The officials managed to get the fire under control.

Caye Caulker Fire Details

As we mentioned this morning, several buildings were destroyed by fire in Caye Caulker. 4 buildings were completely engulfed in flames and destroyed, and 3 structures received partial damage. In an interview with the media, both Police and Fire Officials estimated the damage at close to $1 million dollars. None of the buildings were insured. Fire in Caye Caulker

The San Pedro Sun has confirmed with fire officials that there was a massive fire near the split in Caye Caulker last night (November 23). 4 buildings were completely destroyed, including one hotel and two residential homes. The San Pedro Fire Department were dispatched in the night to Caye Caulker where they assisted the CCFD in bringing the fire under control.
The San Pedro Sun will have more details and pictures from our reporter in the area as the day progresses.
Our thoughts are with those affected by the fire.

Fire Simulation - Response time: 7 minutes

With sirens wailing through the streets, and people calling the SPSun office to alert of a fire, it was a great surprise when our cameraman showed up to find it was simply a simulation exercise. According to fire chief Jerome Garcia, the fire department's response time was 7 minutes. Keep an eye out for more exercises such as these - and kudos to the Fire Department on the constant training!!
