Police Media Relations Workshop held

On Tuesday June 14, 2011, 30 Police Officers from Benque Viejo, San Ignacio and surrounding villages attended a Media Relations Workshop facilitated by the Ministry of Police and Public Safety and the Government Press Office. This is a country wide exercise that has since covered the Belize District and Belmopan. This workshop is being coordinated by the Public Relations Officer in the Ministry of Police and Public Safety, Mr. Raphael Martinez and entails

· knowing the media

· tips when dealing with the media

· legal perspective

· interviewing skills

· role playing

The next workshop is scheduled for Orange Walk in July then proceeds to Dangriga, Punta Gorda and Corozal. The purpose of the Media Relations Workshop is to provide Police Officers with information enabling them to efficiently and effectively engage the media in information sharing regarding matters that affect the public.

Planning for Success: PACT’s Operational Planning Workshop

Cayo, Belize, December 1, 2010—PACT, in collaboration with Friends for Conservation Development (FCD), held a three day Operational Planning Workshop for Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in San Ignacio this week. The workshop is a part of PACT’s mentorship program and was facilitated by FCD, an exemplary NGO in operational planning, with whom PACT hopes to maintain a successful partnership. The main objective of the workshop was to promote more effective protected areas management through organizational capacity development. The workshop involved eight participants, the small number allowing for each to gain the most from the training. Participants were: Sarteneja Fishermen Association, Trial Farm, Belize Development Foundation, Belize Fishermen Cooperative, Rio Blanco Mayan Association, San Miguel River Keeper Watchers, Itzamna Society and Cayo Honey Quality Producers Cooperative.

The training was unlike usual workshops, being very hands-on. The highlight topics of the training included:
- Planning for Success: Planning in the workplace and project planning
- The Essence of Time: Importance of Punctuality
- Thinking SMART
- Power of Goals: Performance goals
- The Desire of Learning
- Fear of Failure: It’s ok to fall but have to get up
- Teamwork: The Law of Mount Everest
- Diligence in the workplace

Each session allowed participants the opportunity to share from previous experience, and later they were presented with case studies to tackle. Day two of the workshop was a field day at the Western Maya Mountain Massif, a full hands-on experience of planning in the Massif. The visit allowed them to observe and learn various planning techniques used by managers of the civil society and governmental sector. Sheril Tzul, of the Belize Development Foundation, said it “was inspiring to see how people plan and how each one, such as the San Antonio Women’s Group, work closely with their members for a successful venture.” Nadine Nemhard, of the Belize Fishermen Cooperative, felt “discipline in planning” was the essence of the lesson learnt during the day trip.

Following the workshop, PACT will maintain close contact with participants to guide the development of their 2011 Annual Operational Plan. In the New Year, participants will once again come together—this time to present their work plans and receive feedback from their peers.

Green Reef Receives PACT Grant for Sport Fish Conservation Plan

Press Release - Green Reef - Oct. 1, 2010 - Green Reef was awarded a PACT grant to develop a sport fish conservation plan for Belize. One component of the project is to conduct community workshops with the objective of developing recommendations that will be presented to policy makers for the further development of appropriate conservation and management measures for the protection of critical sport fish habitat.

Four stakeholder community workshops have been planned throughout the country to provide input towards the strategies and actions of the conservation plan. As a key stakeholder for your local destination, Green Reef would like to invite you to attend the community workshop for your area as indicated in the attached invitation. San Pedro NEMO members in training

The San Pedro Branch of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) conducted a training exercise for various stakeholders and members of the committee. The training was conducted at the Social Security Building on Pescador Drive. The one day workshop was entitled Emergency Operation Management Training, and was aimed at reviewing the island’s evacuation plan in the event of a natural disaster. The training was conducted by NEMO Coordinator Jeromey Tem-rose Augustine and some 20 people from various government and none government organization took place.
