SPRCS dominates Zone Competition in the Zone B Primary School competition

Four teams from two schools on Ambergris Caye travelled to Caye Caulker on Tuesday June 7^th. The teams travelled to compete against schools from Caye Caulker, for the Zone B elimination of the Primary Schools Football Tournament.

While this leg of the competition is usually held in San Pedro, this year the four teams travelled to our sister island. With only two teams in the female division, SPRCS girls went up against NHAS girls. At the end of that game, the SPRCS girls were successful with a score of one to zero.

SPRCS’ boys first game was against the team from Caye Caulker which was a very tight game, ending in a penalty shot with San Pedro leading by one with a score of eight to seven. Game two for the SP boys saw them victorious over New Horizon boys’ team with a score of one to zero.

Both New Horizon’s Adventist School (NHAS) and San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) sent two teams; one male and one female team.

At the end of the elimination rounds for Zone B – the area encompassing San Pedro and Caye Caulker, it appears both teams representing the Zone are from SPRCS. The teams now prepare to travel to Belize City to the MCC grounds, where they go up against winners from the other zones in the Belize District for the District eliminations. This is scheduled for Wednesday June 15^th.

SPRCS' Alessandra Gutierrez scores 4th highest in the PSE

For students in primary school, the culmination of their 8-year studies is the Primary School Examination (PSE). The years of study and hard work are tested with the PSE, and often, students find that they must prepare months in advance to do well.

This year, the San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) is proud to name one of its own as the top 4th scorer in the entire country of Belize. Alessandra Gutierrez, daughter of Amparo and Oscar Gutierrez, and Standard 6 student at SPRCS managed to score a total of 368 points out of 400, or 92%. This score puts Alessandra in fourth place countrywide. Holy Redeemer Primary School’s Aliyah Marin topped the exams with a score of three hundred and eighty five points (96.25%). Placing second overall this year is Josette McGann of United Evergreen Primary with three hundred and seventy six points (94%) and Jordan Murrillo of Belize Elementary with three hundred and sixty nine points (92.25%).

At the SPRCS, there is much to celebrate, and according to Mrs. Roxanni Kay, everyone is very “happy and very proud [of all the students].” Of the 58 SPRCS students that sat the exam, 57 passed, making this year’s PSE another success story for the island’s largest, most populated school. Rounding out the top five were Jamie Valentine (87%), Rosanna Guerrero (86%), Jacqueline Hernandez (82.3%) and Xanairi Xiu (81.3%).

Bees cause RC School Students to be evacuated

Students at the San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) were seen walking in file formation heading out of their school grounds. But there was no special activity planned. The reason was BEES! At least one student was stung, leading to the evacuation of well over 800 students from the school compound.Staff from the nearby offices were evacuated as well.
School officials informed the public health department that bees were seen in the school compound, and when the relevant authorities arrived, they discovered the bee hive inside the space separating the first floor (public library) and the second floor (housing the BTB and the Minister of Tourism's Office) of the building located opposite the school.


According to San Pedro RC School Principal Roxanne Kay, it took the teachers about 20 minutes to get all 800 students off the compound to the central park.
While the bees are exterminated, a section of the street leading to the area is closed to the public.

SPRCS Students embrace their school

In honor of Education Period, students gathered all around their school compound and "hugged" their school. Education Period this year runs from May 3rd through May 15, 2011.

San Pedro RC School Mundialito

The San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS) embarked on a project to acquire and implement a new system of teaching; moving away from the chalk board, which has proven hazardous to some students in terms of allergies; to a white board system. In order for this project to become a reality, funding is needed – funding that is not readily available to the SPRCS. Teachers have found a way to raise funds: A Mundialito Tournament. Students get to play sports, while benefitting from discipline and lessons learned on the field.

One of the organizers of SPRCS Mundialito Tournament, Mr. Kenny spoke to The San Pedro Sun; “On the weekends, a lot of time our students don’t really have lots of constructive things to do. The Mundialito will serve to encourage sportsmanship, healthy habits – exercise and pretty much keep the children off the streets, while raising some funds for our white board project.”

Students from all classes are divided into four divisions. Students from Infant 1 and 2 competed in (Div 1), Standards 1 & 2 (Div 2); Std. 3 & 4 (Div 3); and Standards 5 & 6 (Div 4). Each division comprises of three to four teams competing. Each team represents a different country. Countries being represented include Belize, Brazil, Netherlands, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama, countries from the Caribbean, Europe, United States, England and Norway to mention a few.

A special ceremony was held, similar to World Cup opening ceremonies, and parents, guardians and friends came out in droves to show their support for the children. Games will continue throughout the school year, so be sure to swing by and show your support as well!!

San Pedro RC School celebrates Belize's many cultures

Culture day is always a fascinating way to see children's perceptions of the cultures in their country. With a great mix of Maya, Mestizo, Creole, Garifuna, Mennonite, East Indian, Chinese and a growing number of North American residents, Belize is a glorious mix of peoples. San Pedro RC School held an open/culture day on Friday, February 25 to showcase what children have learned about the cultures they were assigned, and below are some photos of the results.

SPRCS Fence gets painted!

Once again, students have been getting into the paints, helping to put on a beautiful mural on the cement fence of the San Pedro Roman Catholic School (SPRCS). With the help of Liza Mills, who is back to give children a chance to color their school beautifully, everyone has been pitching in to add much-needed life to the mural, which, unfortunately didn't quite survive the paintings of the Carnaval season...more

Happy Children's Day!!

What is better for Children's Day than happy children enjoying a day dedicated to them? San Pedro RC School had an open day full of activities planned, and despite inclement weather, managed to squeeze in a few games in between downpours.

San Pedro RC School students cool down with Paletas!

Every year, Larry and Debbie Heimgartner team up with Manelly's Ice Cream Parlor to bring some much needed relief to the students of San Pedro RC Primary School. Paletas (ice pops) are an ice cold treat that bring relief to the students while they study in their hot classrooms.

The Heimgartners have been doing this wonderful activity every year, and the kids are always extra happy to enjoy their treats!!
Loud shouts of "Thank You" fill the air as the Heimgartners go from classroom to classroom with their very able helpers and even Manelly's owner Manuel del Valle.
