Take Your Best Shot winners announced!

For the second year in a row, The San Pedro Sun has conducted its Take your BEST shot competition. We are proud to announce that it was a raving success. A big “Thank you” goes out to all those who took the time to submit your photographs. With so many entries it was difficult to choose our top three winners. We send out our most sincere thank you to our three judges who had the hardest task at choosing a winner. Winners are as follows:

1st place – General – Tommy and Sonia from Caye Caulker with their photo Flight of the Pelican. They won a brand new digital camera courtesy of CELLULAR WORLD. The camera was valued at $450 and came equipped with an MPEG4 player as well as a walkman. Congratulations!!

2nd place – People – Leonardo Melendez with his photo of Garifuna. He won a 20 x 30 poster sized print of his photograph courtesy of BELICOLOR.

3rd place – Landscape – Cullen Walker with his photo of Aerial shot of Turtle Man’s House. He won an 8 x 10 sized print of her photograph courtesy of MOUSE PAD.

Belizean Cocktails Calendar is sizzling hot!

The glossy and attractive almanac “Belizean Cocktails” was released on Wednesday, November 26th and it features a different model for each month. San Pedro receives 1st Garbage Compactor

In respect to addressing the garbage concerns of the San Pedro Community, the San Pedro Town Council is pleased to announce the long awaited arrival of the island's first Garbage Compactor. A promised made to the public by Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation back in February of this year, the compactor made its way on the island on Friday, November 28th.

The stick shift compactor is a heavy duty vehicle that will be utilized for the town core only.

World Aids Day observed today!

As Win Belize's 16 days af activisim, and on Sunday the Torch of Hope arrived on the Shores of La Isla Bonita. The torch run is important because it helps to unite the country together by carrying the torch of hope through all the districts and the cayes as well. This year, the San Pedro Aids Commission joined forces with WIN-Belize and held its annual Solidarity Walk in observance of the Worlds Aids Day on December 1st. Here are some highlights of the event!

The torch run itself brings to light the value of women but also the vulnerability of women to violence. The torch run is not only symbolic but is an issue of collective and individual responsibility which is guided by a principle which exist in the national HIV policy. The torch run not only addresses or in this case have participants who are women, but it also have participants who are men and those men recognize that the issue of women is a partnership, a partnership which will not be successful if both genders don’t come together in addressing the issue.

The run started in Caye Caulker on Tuesday, November 23rd and will continue in Dangriga today and culminate in Corozal on December 6th. This year’s Torch Run is being held under the theme “Silence has a Price!” Thanks to all that particpated!!

Show your support for the Torch Run on Sunday!

The general public is invited to come out and walk with the Women's Issues Network, and the San Pedro Aids Commission on Sunday as the torch of hope will arrive on our shores. Starting point will be at the Central Park at 10:30am in which the walk will kick off at 11:00am. The walk will pass through the Town Core only and after its arrival back to the Park, an all day Health Fair weill be held. The fair will include free HIV/Aids testing and information disbursement. This years Torch Run/Solidarity walk is being held under the theme, "Silence has a price". Join us on sunday as we help to streghten the awareness and reduce the stigma and descrimination of HIV/Aids and Gender based violence. SILENCE HAS A PRICE!
