Going Green!

Tacogirl (http://www.tacogirlblog.blogspot.com/) has managed to rally up quite a bit of enthusiasm for her "Going Green/Recycling" project. Students from Isla Bonita Elementary School and Holy Cross were at the park for a rousing rally, armed with posters and flyers extolling the virtues of recycling and encouraging green ideas.
It's a great project, and with tacogirl's enthusiasm and the public's encouragement of the children will bring about a good change for our little island!
Isla Bonita kids on their way to the park.
After the rally in the park, these kids and their teachers were still quite enthusiastic!

The Tacos! Good job guys! "RECYCLE!!"

RC School Open Day

HIV, Global Warming, Protected Areas, Nutrition, Planets, Cultures and Public Services were topics researched and presented by the San Pedro R.C. School for today’s Open Day. Many projects were presented, and it is always amazing to see the work that children come up with, using only a few items, lots of imagination and some elbow grease! Good job kids!

Radiothon for TS Arthur Victims

The Reef Radio's Eiden Salazar Jr., Nasa Caliz and SPBA's Elito Arceo.

Flash floods and relentless rains brought on devastation and deluge that Belize hasn't seen since Hurricane Hattie in 1961.

The San Pedro Business Association, SP Lions Club and The Reef Radio have joined forces with a radiothon for both Wednesday and Thursday to gather help for those affected by Tropical Storm Arthur. Clothing, food items, and monetary donations are being collected at The Lions Den. Items will be packed and delivered for distribution in the areas where help is most needed.

If you miss the radiothon today, you can still deliver tomorrow! If you miss tomorrow, you can call 226-4054 to find out how you can help. Please give generously!

Arthur is now considered the worst natural disaster in recent times in Belize, with 5 confirmed deaths, and hundreds left homeless. People need all the help they can get. Remember, today it's THEM, tomorrow it could be YOU!

Happy Birthday Boss!!

As always, we wish Mr. Ron Sniffin a very happy birthday. The Sniffin family also wishes his twin Don a happy birthday! We're sure you'll both have a great day! :)

Devastation from Arthur

Right in front of Island Academy is a boat tipped to the side the day after Arthur.

What hit Belize was simply supposed to be a Tropical Depression, but the ravages felt countrywide tell another tale. According to Ramon Frutos, meteorologist, indications are that the remnants of TD Alma joined up with TD Arthur, which strengthened and became a Tropical Storm and ultimately hit Belize and Mexico. San Pedro experienced quite a bit of rain - actually, it still is raining, but not nearly as hard as it was this morning around 4 am. There was something akin to a fireworks show on the island when lightning turned night to day for a good few minutes.

Hard rain, flashes of lightning and loud thunder made for an exciting morning on Monday.

What a sight to wake up to! Flooded yards, overflowing canals on a soggy Monday!

The morning commute was a little interesting today.

Fences swayed and bowed to the breeze during the night; even signs blew down.

As many people are saying today, there hasn't been such an occurence in years. Completely taken aback, people were unprepared for the deluge that was brought overnight. Unconfirmed reports state that there have been three deaths from the South district of Belize, and a family is missing. Homes are flooded, with emergency rescue efforts taking place with BATSUB, NEMO and more. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected.
